Halloween in Bay Ridge

I don't think I realized until Halloween this year how many children live in Bay Ridge ... or at least storm the gates on Halloween to rake in oodles of candy. Maybe people finally read the article from earlier this year claiming that Bay Ridge is the best place in Brooklyn to raise children. Or maybe the candy here is just so much better than in other parts of the borough. I did see a fair amount of snickers bars and very few tootsie rolls.

The kids (H: A fireman; E: A firefly fairy) had a great time weaving and dodging through swarms of ghouls and action heroes and collecting sizable snickers bars. And Kate and I continue to enjoy sneaking a piece of chocolate out of their still-full bags every now and then.

Here are some pictures:

Cookie of the Month - Nov. 2013: Mexican Hot Chocolate galletas

For all the grandpas, the kids the month made the ‘family favorite’ cookie of Jay “Papa Bear” Ward: the Mexican Hot Chocolate cookie.

With the cold weather now upon us, we thought it was time to turn up the heat with a cookie that brings the power of cinnamon (BOOM!), chili powder (BAM!), and also cayenne pepper (KAPOW!).

The kids had a great time making these cookies, getting egg, chocolate, butter, and sugar all over the table and floor. Lucky for the gramps, we threw out the parts that missed the bowl. Double lucky for them, this meant that the proportions were off a bit, making the cookies just a little spicier.

We like these galletas and think they’ll give you the sweet chocolately taste that we all love with a little kick at the end that will keep you warm during this cold month. Like we always say ‘When it’s chilly outside, put some chili inside’ (we’ve actually never said this).

This has nothing to do with cookies, but occurred the same day we were making them.
