Cookie of the Month - Dec: Polvorones

Ah, December. The month of giving. The month of joy and peace. And the month to indulge in deliciously fattening bakery treats.

This month we used child labor to bring the kids' grandparents the 'family favorite,” cookie of Edward "Mr. Angel Slices himself" Gargurevich: The Angel Slice (also known as the Russian Tea Cake, an Italian Butter Nut, a Southern Pecan Butterball, a Snowdrop, a Viennese Sugar Ball, a Snowball, and of course, the Polvorone).

One of Mexico’s most popular treats, consumed on an everyday basis, and found in just about every PanaderĂa (bakery) and any grocery store throughout the whole country, the Polvorone is a melt-in-your mouth shortbread-like cookie that comes in many flavors: plain, pecan, peanut, vanilla, cinnamon and even chocolate, to name some. We went for almonds.

Since the cookie is so light, almonds add a nice and nutty depth of flavor, as well as an extra crunch.

Hope they enjoyed. Here are the photos:

Lots of merrymaking in NYC

We've been having a very holly, jolly time this yuletide season here in New York. Kate is actually trying to break records for most holiday activities enjoyed. My hope is that all this merrymaking doesn't wear down the kids' appreciation for the holidays or, god forbid, Santa (this is called Claustrophobia, I'm told).

Here is a partial list of our activities so far:

Fort Hamilton Christmas Tree Lighting and Children's Party (Dec. 6)

Visiting the North Pole (Macy's) to see Santa (Dec. 8)

This is the best of many shots. Henry was too excited to smile like a normal child. In other news, I found out that Santa speaks North Polish (in addition to all the other languages Christians speak)
We stopped by to see a few nicely decorated store windows
Sledding after our first substantial snowfall (Dec. 10)

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights (Dec. 13)

New York City Botanical Gardens for their Holiday Train Show (Dec. 14)

We experienced a mild snowstorm this day, making life more festive looking

Taking a holiday walk through the neighborhood, including stopping by the North Pole to write letters to Santa and see a Nativity play (Dec. 14)

Holiday cookie making (Dec. 15)

A holiday walk through Manhattan, including Central Park, Rockefeller Plaza, and, of course, Koreatown (Dec. 17)

E's holiday pajama party at school (Dec. 18)
