Greece: The odd at sea (like the Odyssey…get it? Please?)

When the ancient Greek poet Home wrote about Ulysses’ odyssey throughout the Greek islands, he regrettably omitted all the delicious dishes the fateful wayfarer probably ate. Well fear not, dear reader, for I will fill you in on all that and more as I trace our steps through these next several blog entries, collectively called “The odd at sea.” It began in late December when I forwarded Kate and her parents (Antonio and Kathryn) a seven-day easyCruise adventure through some of the very same islands made famous in Homer’s epic poem. Several months and missed opportunities to plan a well-thought-out junket later, we were in Athens sucking down gyros, souvlaki, feta, and of course, the local brew: Mythos beer. We had “settled” for eating gyros because we couldn’t find a decently priced place to sell us octopus, the arthropod that loves to tickle. Yes, the gyros were good, but it was this ticklefish that Antonio was interested – nay, categorically focused – on. And, at every port of call thereafter, he rigorously and unwaveringly ensured that we exploited opportunity to put these slimy tentacles in our mouths.
Thanks to this mouth-watering and eye-opening trip, Greek food will always have a special place in my heart…right in the smack dab center of my indigestion zone.
