The South: Part I - Emerald Isle and Savannah

We're a few weeks behind schedule. Sorry. What can we say? We've been busy having a good time.

Our second week-long summer vacation is over and while we may be sad that we have no more week-long summer vacations to look forward to, we're happily welcoming the cooler weather, the start of kindergarten (!), and the completion of these blog posts.

Kate and the kids actually had a two-week-long vacation in August. The first week was at:

The Beach House ... where the kids had a great time running on the beach with Pecos, playing with grandparents, and exploring the local aquarium (and donning silly hats). Although the weather didn't always cooperate, they managed to always have fun.

Pecos is just yawning

Wilmington, NC ... well, this is one of the only pictures we have of this place. The kids obviously weren't too impressed. But the city has a cute riverwalk, a historic downtown, a decent indoor (air conditioned!) city market, and has a young, kitchy feel. Definitely worth the visit.

Georgetown, SC ... This is the third-oldest "city" in the U.S., so we figured it had to have a little charm. Well, we were right. It does have a little (very little) charm. Like Wilmington, it too had a riverwalk (much smaller and, unfortunately, overlooking a smelting plant) and a historic downtown (one street), but that was about it. Not worth the visit.

Savannah ... finally! This was the most southern point on our trip and, boy, did it feel like the South. Although it was hot and muggy (to be expected in August), we had a great time (not evidenced by the below photo). We took a FREE! boatride on the Savannah River, explored the city market and pedestrianized waterfront, took a tour of the historic 'downtown' area, including its 24 well-manicured parks, went to three museums, ate at a restaurant that real pirates allegedly at ate 300+ years ago, and visited a centuries-old plantation that had a beautiful boulevard guarded by live oak trees draped with hanging moss.

We also visited a Krispie Kreme (I couldn't help myself) and saw an alligator at the Savannah Natural Wildlife Refuge (actually in South Carolina).

Other than the wedding we attended, which I'll talk about in the next blog, Savannah was the highlight of the trip.

These should be pretty self explanatory ....
